Miten sytytetään nuotio?

Pallas-Yllästunturin kansallispuistossa löytyy useita Metsähallituksen luontopalveluiden ylläpitämiä tulipaikkoja. On laavuja, kotia, päivätupia sekä ulkotulipaikkoja. Jos satut päivän ensimmäisenä paikalle, lankeaa tulien sytyttäminen harteillesi. Puukko ja tulitikut on hyvä pitää matkassa, kirves ja puut löytyvät taukopaikan puuvajasta.

Nuotion sytyttämiseen tarvitaan huolelliset valmistelut. Ilman sytykkeitä ei mikään nuotioviritys onnistu helpolla. Tarvitaan paljon tuohta tai kiehisiä, reilu kourallinen. Nämä ohuet, ilmavat siivut syttyvät herkästi ja niiden väliin jää ilmaa ruokkimaan tulta. Koivun tuohi on mainio apuri – tuohessa olevan öljyn ansiosta se syttyy kosteanakin. Tuohta ei saa repiä elävästä puusta, tai sen suojakilpi taudinaiheuttajia vastaan katoaa.

Kosteaa maata vasten nuotio syttyy huonosti. Aloita nuotion tekeminen asettamalla puita pohjalle eristekerrokseksi. Tämän kerroksen päälle saat kasattua haluamasi nuotiomallin. Yhtä ainoaa oikeaa tyyliä nuotion tekemiseen ei ole, tässä kaksi hyvää vaihtoehtoa ja yksi huono.

Aku Ankka -nuotio

Älä tee näin – syttykasa palaa nopeasti pois, mutta ei sytytä kaukana olevia isoja puita. Tämä sarjakuvista tuttu nuotio sopii parhaiten pienille kynsitulille, pienillä pystypuilla, jotka asetellaan lähelle sytykekasaa. Hyvänä puolena saa nopeasti pienet tulet, huonona puolena tämä nuotiomalli on hutera ja kahvipannulle tarvitaan oma teline.

Puita asetellaan tiiviisiin riveihin, toisiinsa nähden ristikkäin. Väliin ei jätetä rakoja. Puiden koko pienenee ylöspäin. Komeuden päälle tulee läjä sytykkeitä, sekä mielellään vielä puutikkuja varmistamaan, että syttökasan tuli riittää sytyttämään alapuoliset puut. Hyvänä puolena tämä nuotio palaa pitkään ja on huoleton – ei ole tarvetta lisätä puita. Huonona puolena tämän nuotion tekemiseen tarvitaan melko paljon puita. Sytyttämisvaiheen jälkeen talon päälle voi laittaa pannun.

Tässä yleisessä nuotiomallissa sytykkeet laitetaan eristekerroksen päälle. Puita ladotaan sytykkeiden päälle harvakseen ristikkäisiin riveihin. Sytykekasasta tuli nousee ylöspäin ja sytyttää päälle ladotut puut. Puiden väliin täytyy jäädä hieman ilmaa, jotta alla kytevä tuli saa happea. Hyvänä puolena tämä malli on melko toimintavarma ja toimii myös kahvipannun alusena. Huonona puolena nuotio palaa nopeammin kuin tiivis päältä sytytettävä malli. Kannattaa vahtia, ettei pannu kaadu puiden palaessa alta.

How to make a fire?

In the National Park of Pallas-Yllästunturi, there are several spots for your breaks. There are open campfire sites, wilderness huts, Lapp huts called “kota” and lean-to shelters. You are free to use these, thanks to Metsähallitus, Parks & Wildlife Finland. Warm up next to a fire or grill some sausages like the Finns. But what to do if you are the one who has to make the fire?

1. Head to the woodshed, found at all designated hut and campfire sites. You will find an axe there. Only use it if you know what you are doing! Chop an armful of wood into smaller pieces. This is especially important, if the logs feel damp. Even if the wood is damp on the outside, it will most likely be dry on the inside.

2. Next you need tinder. Not (necessarily) the mobile application. If you have a knife, carve thin pieces of angel hair, wood chips, off a log. This takes some effort and nerves but will save time in the end, as the thin wood chips will get your fire going quickly. If you don’t have a knife, find birch logs and tear some bark off. Birch bark makes excellent tinder, as it’s full of oils. It will catch fire even when wet. Never tear bark off a living birch! Bark is the skin of trees. If torn, the tree is vulnerable to disease. All in all you need at least a handful of tinder to get the fire started. Also, find some small pieces of wood, kindling, in the woodshed unless you have already chopped some by axe.

3. Place the bundle of tinder in the middle of fire pit. If there is snow in the pit, start by placing 3-4 large logs on the bottom for insulation. Then add the tinder. There might be matches near the fire place, there might not. Bring your own, just to be sure. Light the tinder and add some very thin wood on top of it. A good kindling is larger than tinder but much smaller than a log found in the shed. Fire needs oxygen, so spread the small wood slightly apart. Wait for the fire to grow before adding more kindling. If you pile the larger wood too early, the fire might suffocate. Once the kindling has ignited properly and you see larger flames, you can be sure the fire has started. Now you can start adding the big logs.
